Materials Engineer / Analyst Description:The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and engineering development located in Laurel, MD, seeks a Materials Engineer/Analyst to carry out materials analysis R&D in support of customer requirements.In this role, you will serve as a materials engineering resource for planning and conducting materials analyses and process R&D in support of on-going APL programs; developing experimental plans and carrying out appropriate characterization methods to solve complex materials and processing problems - physical, mechanical and thermal property determinations. You will also develop new analysis methods and procedures as required to meet new application requirements; modify standard characterization methods, fixtures, or processing procedures, developing custom methods or processes; and analyzing and interpreting results, documenting and reporting those results obtained for customers and presenting findings to external sponsors and the technical community (publications, conference presentations, etc.). In addition, your responsibilities will include assisting in developing estimates and technical approaches; develop new work opportunities through internal and external networking and proposals; and carry out independent technical initiatives on materials, structures and systems to support APL Programs and Business Area technology. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for direct interaction with customers and colleagues. Independent worker with a good work ethic and natural curiosity in understanding materials, their interaction and their applicability to different mission environments.The following is desired, but not required:3-5 years experience in performing and interpreting thermal analyses. M.S. degree with applicable research topic. Experience in mechanical testing (tensile, compressive, shear) of metals, polymers and ceramics.
