RMD Inc., located in Watertown, MA, offers an opportunity for a scientist/leader direct its Optics/Photonics Group in obtaining additional funding and in carrying out high quality research and development commensurate with the requirements of the SBIR program.
The Optic Group’s objective is to break new ground in the development of instruments used in optical detection for medical, homeland security and other applications. The job requires someone with broad knowledge of optics, including light sources, materials, sensors and instrumentation. Recent projects include the development of methods for single molecule detection, diffused optical tomography in tissue for cancer detection and advanced photodiode technologies for LIDAR applications.
RMD combines a capability for university quality research with the ability (through RMD Instruments) to commercialize technologies. It is a leader in the government sponsored SBIR program and since its founding in 1974 has introduced many innovative technologies.Responsibilities will include:
· Develop a reputation of excellence for the group.
· Effectively manage the group to advances its scientific capabilities and commercializable technologies.
· Personally write and submit a substantial number of successful research proposals.
· Actively assist the senior staff to write and submit their own successful proposals by guiding the selection of topics, reviewing and improving the story lines, and improving the clarity of thought and prose contained in the submissions.
· Actively contribute technically to the quality of group's research activities through one-on-one interactions with the technical staff with respect to experimental design, and interpretation of data.
· Originate ideas for proposals and coordinate with government agencies and industry both by telephone and personal visits to tune those ideas to enable sufficient contract support to allow the group to conduct important and creative research and to increase in size.
· Present research findings at major conferences and symposia, and publish results in relevant journals. Attend professional meetings to build a rapport with scientists at universities, government facilities and other companies, and to maintain strong knowledge of the current state of the art.
· Identify technologies with commercial potential and assist the transition to commercial production.
Needed Skills:
· Broad knowledge of photonics, material science, sensors and instrumentation. Versatility to learn and integrate new technologies as the field evolves.
· Ph.D. in physics or other related scientific disciplines.
· History of personal success in development and commercialization of technologies, writing proposals and securing research grants. SBIR experience is highly desirable. Hands on experimentalist.
· Successful experience running and building a research group.
· Resume that includes significant publications and patents.
