The Composite Manufacturing Engineer, Sr. is responsible for providing general manufacturing engineering services and/or carries out major projects involving the improvement of techniques, procedures and equipment for composite manufacturing, assembly and testing.  The incumbent may be given overall responsibility for a major area of activity, or work on assigned projects.  May work alone or have functional responsibility for one or more junior manufacturing engineers or other personnel for specific assignments or projects.  Work requires individual initiative and contacts with other Division functions, outside vendors and manufacturers.

 



Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

 

· Establish methods, routes and sequences for winding, machining, assembly and testing operations; prepare operations planning sheets for production and prototype parts; review and update as required. 

· Design or update design of lay-up, bonding, and cutting tools, trim, inspection and test fixtures; ensure conformance to latest engineering revision.

·  Obtain tool quotes from vendors; evaluate and coordinate procurement. 

· Prepare cost estimates for new products, government contracts or other special projects.  Prepare cost sheets for outside production operations; assist in evaluating vendor bids. 

· Adapt and/or assist in the design of standard and special production machinery. 

· Develop data and provide information for the justification of new machinery; prepare capital expenditure requests. 

· Troubleshoot and provide technical information and assistance to operators in the performance of critical process operations and on the operation of new equipment and/or tooling. 

· Provide liaison with sales and engineering to improve design and reduce material and production costs. 

· Coordinate vendor production activity; issue tools, gauges and routings and provide consultation and assistance where required. 

· Provide technical guidance and participate in the training of junior personnel. 

· Keep current on new developments in related manufacturing engineering fields and recommends improvements where applicable. 

· Must have good oral, written communications and have a high level of moral and ethical codes. 

· Generate NC programs for maintaining equipment such as, CNC lathes, mills, wire EDM, filament winding machines.

 

 

Education & Experience:

BS degree in Manufacturing engineering, or the equivalent.  Seven or more years experience in related manufacturing processes, equipment and tooling.  Preferred background in Composites, Plastics, and Non-metallics desirable.
