Alternative Energy Specialist (2008-2009)
Alternative Energy Specialist 08-09 Raytheon Polar Services - Experience Antarctica Seeking a unique adventure as well as employment? Raytheon Polar Services is the primary contractor for the National Science Foundation's (NSF) U.S. Antarctic Program. We are currently looking for Alternative Energy Specialist to deploy to McMurdo, South Pole or Palmer research stations on a contract basis beginning in August of 2008. There are three lengths for the contracts: Summer-(Approximately) August or October through February, Winter-(Approximately) February through October, and Year-Long-(Approximately) October through October. We are looking for Primary and Alternate employees to fill all contract positions. The Primary is first in line for the position. The Alternate is next in line to deploy should the Primary be unable to meet deployment requirements. Duties and Responsibilities - Assists the MEC Supervisor with pre-season planning of alternative energy equipment use by grantees and field camps. - Develops recommendations for new alternative energy equipment purchases to fill needs for current season or future needs. - Assesses suitability of equipment to grantee needs, designing and implementing modifications and custom fabrications as required. - Installs systems in the field as needed, including integration with conventional power grids are required. - Performs diagnosis and repair of alternative energy equipment and systems as required. - Provides training in operation and field maintenance to grantees and support personnel. - Performs on-site work to equipment in field as required. - Develops plans for future expansion of alternative energy program in USAP field science. - Documents all work performed and maintains pertinent records. - Operates and maintains shop equipment including welders, compressors, presses, etc. - Maintains adequate supply of spare parts and tools, in coordination with the materials person. - Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work area. - Perform duties in support of Science Support Division metrics (as provided by your supervisor). - Support the achievement of RPSC metrics, whether they can be directly or indirectly, effected by your activities. - Comply with all RPSC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation. - Work to achieve RPSC goals and contractual commitments. - Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the work place. - Performs other duties as required Required Experience - High school diploma or equivalent required. - Four years experience in design, installation, maintenance and repair of photovoltaic and wind generator systems is required. - Knowledge and experience in electrical power generation, including electrical power distribution, and switchgear operation and repair is required. Preferred Experience - Two years training at a technical school is highly desirable. - Electrician certification is highly desirable. Additional Polar Information Contract compensation includes reimbursement of expenses to physically qualify, weekly salary, travel to and from the ice, room & board, and you are eligible for a performance based bonus upon successful completion of your contract.
