Director of Communications Job Description

 

 

Organizational Profile: The Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence (OCDV) formulates policies and programs, coordinates the citywide delivery of domestic violence services, and works with diverse communities to increase awareness of domestic violence. OCDV works closely with community leaders, health care providers, City agencies and representatives from the criminal justice system to hold batterers accountable and to create solutions that are critical to preventing domestic violence in New York City.

 

The Director of Communication

Responsibilities Include: Managing media relations and overseeing effective messages, materials and communications strategies; Preparing speeches and presentations for the Commissioner and other senior staff;  Fielding interview requests received for the Commissioner and coordinating with the Mayor’s Press Office; Tracking all media coverage received; Targeting and pitching to local media to cover community events and programs; Writing news releases; Coordinating special events and conducting community outreach; Developing public education materials; Working with IT staff to update office website.

 

Preferred Skills:  Ability to execute the highest professional standards in written and oral communication; Experience with writing press releases and speeches; Possession of strong interpersonal, collaborative and organizational skills; Ability to work independently, to handle a large volume and variety of tasks in a timely manner with attention to detail and commitment to follow-up; Proficient computer skills for internet research and use of standard computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Experience in implementing a variety of communications strategies; knowledge of domestic violence preferred; and bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

 

Education: Bachelors degree plus a minimum of 2 years experience.

 

Salary: $50,000 to $55,000 plus excellent comprehensive benefits package
