Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a leader in antisense oligonucleotide research and drug discovery. Isis has established a strong drug discovery program across multiple therapeutic areas including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, oncology and inflammatory diseases.  Isis currently has 15 drugs in development with many near term product opportunities in preclinical drug discovery research

Overview:

A senior individual who has the ability to effectively lead the activities of the Finance function as well as a team of professionals.  This includes but is not limited to, financial planning, financial analysis, collaboration financial management, project accounting, strategic financial planning and risk management. Individual must be confident taking appropriate risks while exercising sound judgment with appropriate weight given to the needs of the company and individual functions within the company. Experience communicating strategic financial messages to boards of directors, senior management and external audiences is a must. Must be able to identify, quantify and communicate costs and resources in support of strategic corporate initiatives. Ability to read contracts for comprehension, understand implications and provide recommendations required. Knowledge of financial modeling techniques required. Strong computer skills required, especially in the use of spreadsheet software. Position requires effective interpersonal skills as well as strong oral, written and presentation skills. Requires demonstrated leadership qualities as this position is expected to exercise significant influence throughout the organization. Ability to meet frequent deadlines and to perform responsibilities within tight schedules and under pressure is important.

 

Job Complexity:

Individual is expected to work at the senior management level on complex problems, business processes and organizational issues and to contribute regularly at both tactical and strategic levels.

 

Discretion:

Individual will exercises judgment to determine appropriate action, while taking into consideration implications to currently defined practices and policies. Expected to recommend and implement appropriate actions outside of defined policies or precedent when necessary. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals may result in serious delays in corporate objectives or significant impact to organizational efficiency.

 

Interactions:

Frequently interacts with executive management, functional area heads, department managers and project team leaders as well as frequent interactions with constituents outside the company. Interactions require the ability to influence decision-making and gain cooperation in a matrix environment.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

Financial Planning and Analysis:

· Manage the annual budget process including headcount, expenses, revenue, capital, balance sheet and cash flow planning.

· Prepare periodic forecasts based on actual results and changing business objectives as required by management and/or business circumstances.

Strategic Financial Planning

· Maintain and update a long-term financial planning model, which can be used to understand the impact of key business decisions on the enterprise value and allow for prompt quantification of various financial transactions.

Financial Reporting:

· Preparation and presentation of monthly financial review packages for executive management, department heads and project team leaders, including at a minimum actual v. budget v. forecast analyses of revenue and expenses, balance sheet accounts, use of cash and project/product profitability.

Collaboration Financial Management

· Manage the financial aspects of the company’s numerous partnerships and collaborations.

· Ensure effective communications with partners regarding financial matters.

· Ensure timely reporting, planning and billing.

Risk Management:

· Ensure adequate insurance coverage is maintained and review risk/cost issues relative to insurance policies and self insurance at least annually.

· Serve as liaison with insurance broker.

Special projects as required.

Minimum Requirements:10-15 years of relevant senior financial management experienceBachelor’s degree in Accounting or FinanceMBA or CPA/CMA

Financial management experience in the life sciences industry
