Director of General Accounting

This position is responsible for all aspects of general accounting for a company that is publicly traded on the NYSE. This includes, but is not limited to, real estate acquisitions, real estate development cost accounting, real estate lot/tract sale accounting, oil and gas exploration accounting and the oversight of the accounts payable function.

EXPECTATIONS

• Effectively provide leadership to the general accounting staff. Provide development plans to all employees by assessing individual skills and competencies.
• Ensure clear communications across departmental teams by effectively managing relationships with business operations.
• Coordination of the monthly close process by ensuring timely and accurate closing of the general ledger.
• Preparation and analysis of key management reports related to business performance.
• Responsible for maintaining a strong system of internal controls and processes.
• Develop and maintain accounting policy and procedures.
• Provide support and analysis to achieve external financial reporting requirements. Works closely with the Director of Financial Reporting.
• Direct interaction with senior leadership within the organization.
• Responsible for continued accounting process improvement and a key team member of corporate projects.
• Review applicable accounting guidance and prepare analysis on the accounting treatment of new standards and pronouncements.
• Review all proposed real estate joint venture agreements and document the appropriate accounting treatment.
• Work closely with partners to ensure accuracy of joint venture financial statements.
• Coordination and support all internal and external audits as it relates to the general accounting function.
• Very strong oral and written communication skills.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and CPA Certification required.
• At least ten years’ of relevant experience, including at least five years of management experience. Prior experience effectively leading a team.
• Extensive knowledge and experience working with GAAP and SEC accounting requirements.
• Extensive experience working with MS Office.
• JD Edwards experience preferred.
• Prior real estate development accounting experience preferred.
• Prior oil and gas accounting experience preferred.
