Skills and Dispositions Required of All Accounting Leadership
Identity
Accounting management team members are chosen for their capacity to act as generalists and specialists. While the accounting community has its specific roles and specialties, cross training at the management team level is a requirement. Job rotations are common. A flexible practice of identity management is a necessity for success. Accounting professionals are hired as Decurion members first and accounting members second. Accounting managers and their staff are partially or fully deployed within business units or other functions in order to conduct their work effectively. Each of these placements requires an ability to manage oneself and one’s identity commensurate with their job demands.
Self-Management
Decurion places a high emphasis on each community member knowing themselves and how they impact others. Self-reflection during and after meetings is a requirement. We engage in ongoing performance dialogues that are both structured and unstructured during which we discuss our effectiveness and our impact on others. Since a large portion of our governance entails peer governance, our ability to give and receive feedback is essential. Each individual is expected to practice effective self-management which includes monitoring their ability to remain calm and focused on business issues regardless of the degree of stress or conflict involved. We practice civility in all our interactions.
Business Approach
In contrast with Decurion, many accounting organizations demand less of their accounting professionals. We hire business people who have an accounting specialization. While accounting professionals routinely analyze business performance and present findings, it is rarer for them to hold accountability for enacting business solutions as partners. At Decurion everyone is required to behave first and foremost as a business person focused on the merit of the business issues. We come to the table as equals in our ability to analyze problems and create potential solutions. Accounting issues are business issues and Decurion has an expectation that its accounting management community will provide leadership in analyzing and framing issues in quantitative terms. We expect high levels of mastery in data analysis, analytical rigor, and project budgeting and planning. Business skills are primary at Decurion regardless of where an individual is deployed and there is a strong expectation to deliver on Decurion’s dual bottom line of financial and developmental returns, regardless of the task that is being conducted.
Leadership
Decurion places an uncommon emphasis on each community member’s ability to lead. We do not associate leadership with hierarchical roles or titles. Each Decurion member is a leader accountable for enacting the Decurion Fundamentals through their job. Leadership differs from management in that the way things are accomplished matters as much as whether they were accomplished. When tasks are done, congruence with our values, purpose and principles must be apparent to all involved. We see our day to day work as a platform for developing ourselves and others.
Learning Community
Decurion is building an accounting learning community rather than an accounting department. The accounting community is required to be inclusive in all activities both internal and external. Accounting professionals are accountable for building systems, processes and infrastructures that promote seamlessness among the Accounting, IT and Operations communities. The governance of accounting is equally hierarchical and communal. All members of the management team are required to master peer governance and communal feedback. Openness, candor and a capacity to deal with difficult issues communally are a day to day work requirement. Day to day operations of accounting and its annual budget are governed through an Accounting Work Group, and management team members associated with business units are members of various operating councils and learning groups.
