Position Summary

The Operations Team at Princeton University Investment Company is responsible for supporting the investment operations of Princeton's Endowment. The team is seeking a candidate to process capital distributions, market values and review financial statements related to the non-marketable asset portfolio of the Endowment. This portion of the portfolio consists primarily of investments in private equity funds such as buyouts and venture capital, as well as real assets such as timber, energy and real estate funds. There will be some involvement with the marketable portfolio, but most of the detailed work will be in the non marketable arena.



Accordingly, the candidate must have a strong understanding of the annual reporting cycle of an investment company, from the development of proper journal entries, through to the sign off of audited financial statements. Candidate must also have the ability to analyze the financial statement of investment companies, and to report to senior management on the reporting or financial weaknesses or deficiencies. Candidate must have the ability to research and report on new developments in the accounting field involving investment companies and to assess the impact on buy side investors.



Responsibilities:



- Compile and analyze financial information for yearend reporting

- Review financials of investment companies and identify GAAP or IFRS compliance

- Interpret and identify financial statement risks in such areas as:

- Carried interest accruals

- Negative GP balances/Clawbacks

- GP loans

- Risky investment strategies

- Partnership agreements

- Changes in accounting methods

- Valuation

- Work closely and liaise with colleagues within and outside the department

- Perform all month end closing procedures

- Bank Reconciliations

- Compilation of financials and audit work papers for subsidiary entity

- Reconcile internal records with custodial bank

- Research and reconcile partner statements and financials with internal records

- Process in kind distributions

- Calculate carried interest payments and reserve accruals

- Assist in vendor management [Burgiss product related to the private equity investments]

- Play a key role in continuing efforts to improve accounting practices and operational efficiency

Essential Qualifications

Position Requires:



- Bachelor's degree, preferably in accounting, finance or equivalent

- 4 - 6 years previous experience in an accounting role, preferable in a financial services firm

- Knowledge of accepted accounting practices and principles

- Strong work ethic

- Great attention to detail and accuracy

- Strong communication skills

- Ability to be flexible and work well in a small team environment

- Must possess strong mathematical and reasoning abilities

- Experience and fluency in Microsoft Office applications and relational database management

- Strong organizational abilities and ability to multi-task

Preferred Qualifications
